Anticonvulsant for partial (focal) seizures and trigeminal neuralgia. Off-label for bipolar disorder, neuropathic pain, and alcohol withdrawal.
How it Works
Prodrug converted to active 10-monohydroxy derivative (MHD) which blocks sodium channels, stabilizing hyperpolarized neuronal membranes and reducing epileptic discharge.

Common Side Effects
Dizziness, diplopia, ataxia, somnolence, hyponatremia (clinically significant — monitor sodium), nausea, vomiting. Skin rash in ~5%.
Safety Warnings
⚠️ Hyponatremia can be severe and life-threatening — monitor sodium especially in elderly. HLA-B*1502 screening in Asian patients (SJS risk). Enzyme-inducing — reduces hormonal contraceptive efficacy.
