What is Methimercazole 5mg (METHIMAZOLE)?
Antithyroid drug for hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease, toxic nodular goiter) and preparation for thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy.
How it Works
Inhibits thyroid peroxidase → blocks iodine organification → reduces T3 and T4 synthesis. Does not affect stored hormone — takes 3-6 weeks for full effect.

Common Side Effects
Rash, pruritus, arthralgias, nausea, agranulocytosis (rare but serious).
Safety Warnings
⚠️ Agranulocytosis risk — stop immediately if fever/sore throat and check CBC. Teratogenic (preferred over PTU in non-pregnant adults). Monitor TFTs every 4-6 weeks.
