What is Gemfos Tab 150mg (ALENDRONATE)?
Bisphosphonate for osteoporosis prevention and treatment in postmenopausal women and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Also used for Paget’s disease.
How it Works
Binds to hydroxyapatite in bone → inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption → increases bone mineral density. Reduces fracture risk by 40-50% at vertebral sites.

Common Side Effects
GI irritation (esophagitis, heartburn, abdominal pain), musculoskeletal pain, osteonecrosis of jaw (rare), atypical femur fracture (rare, long-term).
Safety Warnings
⚠️ Must be taken on empty stomach with full glass of water — remain upright for 30 minutes. Contraindicated in esophageal abnormalities. Drug holiday after 3-5 years of use recommended. Dental work before starting.
