What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a 9-amino acid cyclic nonapeptide (Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH₂) secreted by the posterior pituitary. It activates oxytocin receptors (OTR) — a G-protein coupled receptor (Gq/11) — in brain, uterus, mammary gland, and periphery. Central OTR activation modulates social bonding, trust, anxiety, and stress response via HPA axis interaction. Peripheral OTR activation drives uterine contraction and milk letdown. Oxytocin also exerts anti-inflammatory effects via NF-κB inhibition and has cardiovascular protective properties via OTR on cardiomyocytes. Half-life is ~5 minutes IV, longer with intranasal or SC routes in research models.
